Expense Support

Grant Amount Based on Need

Typical awards range from $500 to $5,000. Larger awards will be considered for exceptional projects.

Are you a faculty member or PhD student in need of funding for your academic research?

Our Hayek Fund offers grants to PhD students and faculty conducting research within the liberal tradition at an accredited college or university. Whether you need support for travel, research collaboration, journal submissions, or other eligible expenses, our program is designed to help offset the costs associated with your project.

We are currently not accepting any new applications until February 2026. We invite you to explore other funding opportunities, including our new Requests for Proposals, in the meantime.

Eligible Expenses

  • Travel for conference presentations and archival research
  • Research collaboration and hiring a research assistant
  • Journal submission fees
  • Purchase of data sets
  • LLM subscriptions necessary for research
  • Book publication expenses (e.g. copy editing, indexing)

Ineligible Expenses

  • PhD application fees
  • Living expenses (e.g. rent)
  • Hardware costs (e.g. laptops, printers)
  • Tuition expenses
  • Retroactive expenses
  • Conference travel without giving a presentation
  • Institutional overhead or indirect costs

Preference will be given to research directly tied to IHS initiatives, to projects that outline specific publishing goals, and to applicants from top research institutions. View our Funding FAQ page to find answers to common questions.

Applications will reopen in February 2026.

Here is the timeline for our application process:

  1. Apply for a position 
  2. An HR team member will review your application submission  
  3. If selected for consideration, you will speak with a recruiter 
  4. If your experience and skills match the role, you will interview with the hiring manager
  5. If you are a potential fit for the position, you will interview with additional staff members
  6. If you are the candidate chosen, we will extend a job offer

 

All candidates will be notified regarding the status of their application within two to three weeks of submission. As new positions often become available, we encourage you to visit our site frequently for additional opportunities that align with your interests and skills.
