A Crucial Conversation on Democracy and Solidarity

with James Davison Hunter

June 17, 2024

12:00–12:45 PM ET

Liberal democracies like the United States foster peace, freedom, and widespread prosperity for its people. Unfortunately, there is no denying the growing rift and deepening political divide our society is experiencing.

Rising illiberal ideologies pose a threat to our most cherished democratic institutions and individual freedoms, and hinder the promise of pluralism and widespread human flourishing.

Join the Institute for Humane Studies for an important discussion on democracy and solidarity with James Davison Hunter of the University of Virginia.

James will discuss his latest book, Democracy and Solidarity: On the Cultural Roots of America’s Political Crisis, and explore methods for working together to solve the challenges that divide us.

The conversation will be followed by Q&A.

James Davison Hunter is the LaBrosse-Levinson Distinguished Professor of Religion, Culture, and Social Theory at the University of Virginia. He has written eight books, edited three books, and published a wide range of essays, articles, and reviews all variously concerned with the problem of meaning and moral order in a time of political and cultural change in American life.
