Overview
Join the Institute for Humane Studies for a two-day, in-person graduate papers workshop on “The Political Economy of Housing,” hosted in partnership with Dr. Jeffrey Clemens (University of California, San Diego). Held in San Diego, California, on February 27–28, this workshop offers PhD students and postdoctoral researchers the opportunity to present works in progress and receive detailed, constructive feedback from peers and faculty discussants.
We especially welcome interdisciplinary research examining the economic, political, and institutional forces shaping housing markets and access to affordable housing. This workshop invites scholars working on topics such as housing supply constraints and land use regulation, zoning reform and local governance, neighborhood politics and development, the distributional consequences of housing policy, public finance and property taxation, housing subsidies and social insurance, homelessness policy, and the interactions between housing, labor markets, and migration. Projects at any stage, from abstract to full paper draft, are welcome.
Participants will refine their research, engage in substantive cross-disciplinary dialogue, and join a community of scholars. IHS will provide all participants with a $200 honorarium and a stipend to offset lodging, transportation, and travel-related meal expenses. All meals during the workshop itself will be provided by IHS.
