Are you interested in gaining experience in the policy world, but would rather work in your home state? Do you want to see how policy is made on a state-wide level? If so, you should consider the State-Based Fellow Program. You will be able to enjoy the benefits of the Charles G. Koch Summer Fellow Program while interning at a think tank that focuses on state issues.
In 2005, the Institute for Humane Studies (IHS) partnered with the State Policy Network (SPN) to launch its first public policy fellowship program for state-based think tanks. In the world of policy, some policy changes are more effectively implemented at the state-level rather than the federal-level. The opportunity to work at a state-based think tank next summer will provide you with a chance to make valuable contributions in society and to learn how to work with state legislators and political activists. During the eight-week internship, you will have the opportunity to work at one of the state-based think tanks listed below. You can browse the list of available organizations by state or by organization name.
As a state-based fellow, you will participate in the opening and closing seminars of the program with the other fellows to learn about how to apply market-based analysis and the ideas of liberty to policy-making. You will also take part in career seminars and publication workshops. The weekly lecture series given in Washington, DC, will be webcasted so all the state-based fellows can participate. You will be able to keep in touch with the other fellows through a community website.
Like any Koch fellow, you will need to demonstrate strong initiative and a self-starter attitude in order to get the most out of your internship experience. In addition to your policy work, your host think tank will provide you with:
- entrance and exit interviews;
- public speaking/presentation opportunities;
- a mock job interview;
- meetings with key staff members;
- regular meetings between you and your immediate superior; and
- performance evaluations.
If you are interested in this program track, apply for the Charles G. Koch Summer Fellow Program and indicate your interest in the state-based think tanks your prefer.
The IHS provides fellows with the transportation costs while SPN provides the stipend and housing allowance. Fellows will be responsible for finding housing close to their internships and will be required to keep in contact with the IHS program director throughout the summer.
