Poverty & Prosperity
For undergraduates interested in discussing globalization and the challenges of sustainable development from the libertarian perspective.
Globalization has significantly improved the standard of living in many countries, spurring economic growth and disseminating ideas that protect individual rights. But what about the concerns that globalization marginalizes the poor, harms the natural environment, or degrades human culture? Does free market capitalism help or hinder development around the world? What can be done to promote prosperity?
Join us as we address these issues and explore interdisciplinary solutions. Lectures will include topics such as:
- Globalization and cultural autonomy
- Human rights and famine relief
- Economics, public choice and politics
- Immigration and remittances
- Entrepreneurship and local wealth creation
- Cultural change from ancient to modern times
- A case study in development: Botswana vs. Zimbabwe
"The seminar is a great opportunity to meet other students passionate about development and benefit from their perspectives.” – Robert Martin, Seminar Participant, 2009
