The Summer Graduate Research Fellowship is a non-residential research and writing program that provides an opportunity to refine and complete a publishable scholarly article or thesis chapter that engages ideas within the classical liberal tradition. Fellows work under the guidance of a faculty supervisor and with the benefit of discussions amongst other program participants.

The program begins and ends with conferences where fellows present their research and consider the classical liberal tradition. Throughout the summer, fellows participate in an online discussion forum about a selected classical liberal book or set of readings.
The program includes a $5,000 stipend plus a travel and housing allowance to attend the two conferences.
The program director is Dr. Bill Glod [3], the Philosophy Program Officer at IHS. Dr. Glod joined IHS in 2009 from Tulane University where he taught philosophy for several years. Other IHS program officers will also advise fellows in their respective disciplines.
The program is by invitation only. IHS often invites alumni of other IHS programs such as the Humane Studies Fellowship [4] and Summer Seminars [5]. Eligible candidates include advanced graduate students—doctoral or law—who are planning academic or research careers and conducting research germane to the classical liberal intellectual tradition.
"I did research, I wrote, I revised, I made lasting friendships, and I wrote some more. By the end of ten weeks, I had completed a solid, polished chapter. The summer was extraordinarily productive, stimulating, and fun."
