Eligibility: Applications will be considered from those who will be full-time graduate students or undergraduate juniors or seniors in the 2012-2013 academic year and have a clearly demonstrated research interest in the intellectual and institutional foundations of a free society. Awards are based on academic or professional performance, relevance of one's work to the advancement of a free society, and potential for success.

Application Fee: $25. You may pay by credit card or check. Payment instructions appear on the last page of the application. Your applications will not be reviewed until payment is received.

ACADEMIC AND PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

  • how your intellectual beliefs developed and what influenced your decision to become an academic
  • a rough timeline for the completion of your studies, including key milestones such as completion of coursework, promotion to candidacy, and completion of the dissertation
  • your possible career goals, including where you see yourself in 5, 10, and 20 years  

*Former Fellowship winners should also include an update on your degree progress since your last application.

What highly-regarded work or prevailing view in your field do you take to be misguided in a way that is inimical to liberty, and why? What implications would a correction of this work or view have for understanding liberty?
 
Professional Goals and Interests *

  • your professional goals in graduate school, including research or teaching interests
  • the relationship between those professional goals and classical liberalism
  • the impact your work will have for understanding or advancing liberty

Writing Sample
Submit a double-spaced term paper, essay, or legal brief of no more than 30 pages that demonstrates your performance in your major field of study.

Dissertation Proposal
If you have completed your dissertation proposal, please submit/upload it.

Syllabus
If you have taught or will soon teach any courses, please attach a syllabus you have used or plan on using. 

RECOMMENDATIONS

Please enter the names, email addresses, and the nature of your relationship with at least two individuals who can comment on your academic work, career performance, and potential for future success. Once you submit your application, we will contact your references via email and ask them to enter their recommendations through an online form. The final deadline for entering recommendations is January 19, 2012. All recommendations are confidential and will not be seen outside of the Humane Studies Fellowship Review Committee. 

Note: It is vitally important that the email addresses you submit are correct. Please double-check them. If you submit an incorrect email address, your recommender will not receive notification and will be unable to submit a recommendation.
