The IHS Journalism Internship Program places talented writers and communicators—who support individual liberty, free markets, and peace—at media companies and non-profit newsrooms. Past interns have worked at 20/20, the The Orange County Register, Reason.TV, Fox News, and many other organizations. Internships occur during the spring, summer, and fall.

A Comprehensive Program

• Eight-week internship at a newspaper, radio station, new media company, or non-profit, investigative newsroom 
• $3,200 stipend and an allowance for travel to internship and program seminar
• Mentoring and job placement assistance from the program director, a former journalist
• Journalism seminar featuring journalists and professors, and many networking opportunities

Four Tracks

Newspaper		Broadcast		New Media		Investigative
Intern at a daily newspaper. Write features, report hard news, contribute opinion commentary.		Work at a major media network or news production house. Schedule interviews, research stories, and edit videos.		Intern at a web-only media firm or a media company with an aggressive new media strategy.		Sharpen your research skills at a public policy organization or independent, non-profit newsroom.

Placement Process

Once accepted into the program, the program director will match you with a host based on your goals and experience and a host’s needs. The program director will speak with you by phone to discuss opportunities. IHS provides a travel allowance to get to the internship.

You can also apply for funding for an internship secured on your own, turning an unpaid internship into a paid one.

Journalism Seminar

The program includes our weeklong journalism seminar, Journalism & a Free Society. Experienced journalists share career stories and advice, and outstanding professors explain the foundations of a free press and economic tools for understanding political and economic issues. You can network with other interns and the faculty during meals, discussion groups, and nightly receptions. IHS provides travel assistance to the workshop. All program interns from throughout the year—fall, spring, and summer—attend.
