Summer Seminars
How to Get Course Credit
Interested in receiving course credit for attending a summer seminar? If your college or university offers an independent study option, you may be able to design an independent study that includes your attendance at an IHS seminar. Do your research ahead of time; the requirements at every school are different.
Here are some suggestions for possible ways to earn course credit:
- Ask your Dean’s office if you can undertake an independent study and learn what the requirements are. Make sure you follow the requirements and submit all forms on time!
- Find a potential faculty advisor or sponsor—most independent study courses require that you have one—and talk to them about what you want to do.
- Propose to write a paper on a topic discussed at the seminar.
All seminar participants receive seminar study aids that can help obtain and complete independent study:
- Pre-seminar readings to show to a prospective faculty advisor (e-mail your seminar assistant or Seminars@TheIHS.org if you would like to receive a bibliography in advance of the mailing in mid-May)
- A bibliography of additional readings for every seminar lecture
- Books to take home from the seminar
