Journalism Internships

Application deadline: January 31, 2008
The deadline for Summer 2008 placements has passed.

Gain reporting experience and expand your professional network this summer working for a daily Freedom Communications newspaper.

The application requires a resume, several essays, and published writing samples.

Internship dates for summer 2008 vary slightly by placement but will start in early June and end in August.

  • $400/week stipend
  • Work as a reporter at a newspaper
  • Housing allowance and travel
  • Seminar and career workshops

If you are looking for an opportunity to work as an intern at a newspaper where you will actually get to report rather than merely fetch coffee, this is the program for you! The average intern walks away with at least forty clips. No previous experience is necessary, we're looking for good writers passionate about liberty. Students from all disciplines, including political science and economics are encouraged to apply.

For more information, please read the Journalism Internships Frequently Asked Questions.

In case you are underestimating the role of an internship for your career development, columnist Dave Barry offers this advice:

Do you have any advice for someone interested in journalism (such as college courses to take, things to study)?
Read a lot and write a lot. Above all, get practical work experience at real newspapers; this is MUCH more important than academic courses.

What courses would you recommend as being the most beneficial for one interested in journalism?

English and history.

Would you recommend graduate school?

No. Real-world experience is WAY better.

Would you recommend internships? If so, what kind?
Yes; at newspapers that let interns report and write stories that actually get printed.

Please describe an average entry-level position for a journalist.
It'd be at a small- to medium-sized newspaper, probably as a general-assignment reporter, covering meetings, fires, police news, etc. Also writing obits.
