Program Dates: June 6 - August 14, 2009If you're thinking about a career in public policy, there's no better place to be than in Washington, DC, or at a state-based think tank. And there's no better introduction to the policy world than the Charles G. Koch Summer Fellow Program.
Fellows based in DC learn about the world of think tanks, policy analysis, and legislative reform through an eight-week internship at one of Washington’s top market-oriented research institutes, focusing on national or international policy.

A Unique Internship Program
As one of 50 Koch Summer Fellows based on DC, you will have a unique opportunity to
- work with top policy experts, journalists, and academics
- explore market-based solutions to critical social and economic problems
- gain the skills necessary to effect policy change
- live rent-free for the summer with other Koch fellows, in furnished housing provided by IHS.
If accepted as a Summer Fellow, IHS provides the following program benefits:
- $1,500 Stipend
- Furnished housing in the DC area
- An eight-week internship at a think-tank or government agency, arranged by IHS.
- Seminars on policy analysis and classical liberal/libertarian thought
- Career workshops on writing, public speaking, and media relations
- Travel reimbursement (low-cost, discount airfare)

The DC Internship Experience
Your summer experience begins on June 6 with an opening seminar James Madison University, just outside Washington. There, you will get to know the other members of the program and enjoy a course on market-based policy analysis and its intellectual foundations.
After the seminar, you will begin an eight-week internship. You will work full-time with one of the many policy research institutes, publications, government agencies, or public interest law firm. In your internship, you will work directly with experts in researching and developing market solutions to today's critical problems and defending economic and
Throughout the summer, you will attend evening lectures, panels, and small group discussions on current policy topics with top policy experts in DC. You will also gain invaluable skills through writing projects, public speaking workshops, and resume coaching.
The summer will end with a second week-long seminar, giving you the opportunity to present the results of a group research project to your peers while further developing your professional skills.
The program is a fellowship in every sense of the word. Discussion groups and workshops allow you to raise and discuss issues that concern you. You will make lifetime friends from among the many fellows who share your interest in ideas. And you will join the network of program alumni who are succeeding in policy, journalism, legal, business, and academic careers.
