Freedom, Tolerance & Civil Society Summer Seminar
| June 14 - 20, 2008 | Simmons College (Boston, MA)
| A seminar for students interested in civil liberties and personal choice issues. |
Embark on an exploration the individual rights, community, and law. Learn about a wide range of public policy issues, including freedom of expression, education reform, health care, self defense, sex and gender law, and drug policy. Consider how we balance individual liberty with public health and safety, how personal freedom benefits society, and how civil liberties relate to both political and economic freedom. Lectures and discussions of philosophy, political science, and economics will examine how societies define and defend freedom and provide a framework for analyzing current laws and proposed reforms.
Sample Lecture:
James Stacey Taylor, a professor of philosophy from the College of New Jersey, discusses the harm principle. When is government or society justified in intervening to forcibly prevent someone from acting as they wish to act? What principles should be used to determine whether laws are just or unjust?
