Fall Internship Deadline: July 1, 2010 (Application online in March)

Write copy, not make copiesThe Newspaper Track of the IHS Journalism Internship Program offers the opportunity to gain reporting experience and expand your professional network working for a daily newspaper. During the internship, you'll get to report rather than merely fetch coffee! The average intern walks away with at least twenty clips. The internships take place during the spring, summer and fall.

No previous experience is necessary. We're looking for good writers passionate about liberty. Students from all disciplines, including political science and economics are encouraged to apply.

Placed at a daily newspaper, you'll work on a variety of assignments:

  • writing features
  • reporting hard news
  • contributing opinion commentary
  • pursuing investigative stories

Regular feedback on your work from editors and your fellow journalists will strengthen your abilities. And you'll develop a network of professional contacts that will help you launch a career in journalism.

You'll also participate in our Journalism & the Free Society summer workshop at Bryn Mawr College. At the weeklong workshop, you’ll learn market-based tools to understand today's most important political and social problems and receive advice from experienced journalists.

A Comprehensive Program

  • Eight-week internship with a $3,200 stipend and a travel allowance (interns must obtain their own room and board)
  • Participation in our weeklong summer workshop, Journalism & the Free Society, including travel assistance
  • Mentoring from IHS program staff

Possible Placements

We select newspapers that provide fulfilling internship experiences in large metropolitan areas or medium-sized markets. These newspapers assign a mentor to provide guidance and help you develop your skills. In past years, internships have been available at the following papers:

To be considered for the newspaper track, please select that track on your application.
