Fall Internship Deadline: July 1, 2010
Sharpen your journalism skills during a paid internship in print, broadcast, new media or investigative journalism during the fall, spring or summer.
The IHS Journalism Internship Program offers internships at newspapers, major media networks, new media firms, and state-based policy organizations. Past interns have worked at 20/20, the Orange County Register, Reason.TV, CNN, Fox News, and many other companies and organizations.
A Comprehensive Program
- Eight-week internship with a $3,200 stipend and a travel allowance (interns must obtain their own room and board)
- Participation in our weeklong, summer workshop, Journalism & the Free Society, including travel assistance
- Mentoring from IHS program staff
Previous experience is a plus but not required. We're looking for skilled writers and communicators passionate about liberty and who support individual rights and free markets. We encourage students from all disciplines, including political science and economics, to apply. Undergraduates, graduate students, and recent graduates of all majors are eligible.
During your internship, an IHS staff member, with years of journalism experience, will check in with you to provide tips on how to make the most of your internship.
Journalism Career Seminar
As part of the program, all interns (fall, spring, and summer) attend a weeklong journalism workshop during the summer. Experienced journalists will share career stories and advice, and outstanding professors will explain economic tools for understanding political and economic issues and the foundations of a free press. You can network with other interns and the faculty during meals, discussion groups and nightly socials. IHS provides travel assistance to the workshop.
Four Internship Tracks
Newspaper: Work in the newsroom of a daily newspaper. Publish twenty clips or more.
Broadcast Journalism: Work with an experienced producer at a major media network or news production house. Schedule interviews, research stories, edit videos, and more.
New Media: Develop your web reporting and social networking skills at a web-only media firm or an established media company with an aggressive new media strategy.
Investigative Journalism: Develop your research and analytical skills working under the guidance of a professional investigative journalist at a state-based public policy organization.
Learn More
The internship program includes participation at our summer journalism workshop, but you can also separately apply for the workshop. Join your peers to learn about journalism and classical liberal ideas, network with other aspiring journalists and hear lectures from experienced professionals. Discover how to use economic analytical concepts to examine issues; potentially giving you a “comparative advantage” over other journalists! Read more.
